Shipping Company Expands with Clear Span Metal Building from Whitley
Nashua, NH & Orlando, FL Based Hub – A major shipping company is growing in both the South and North Atlantic markets. In order to keep up with the pace, their capacity at these shipping hubs will need to expand. The challenge in both cases was:
- Avoid interruption to their regular business activities
- Need to be operational in weeks, NOT months
- The Structure would need to be relocatable
- Design to local building code requirements
A Clear Span Metal Building Solution
To meet the tight schedule, Whitley Manufacturing designed the 20,000 ft², clear span metal building with its UpGrade product line. That’s because the UpGrade is the construction industry’s most unique and versatile construction product on the market. It’s a modular built, clear span building with a high ceiling (up to 24 ft), that is delivered on-site as one component. It achieves this with a proprietary design that hinges the roof and walls together. The walls fold up and are delivered on a flatbed trailer (as shown in the picture). Up to three units can be stacked on a trailer, reducing shipping costs. But, the UpGrade is best known for its fast set-up time with only a small work crew and crane. As a result, setup time can be reduced from months to only days.
The UpGrade is 100% relocatable. It disassembles quickly, relocates and can set back up for other purposes. It’s designed to relocate multiple times without weakening the structure or its precision fit. Finally, due to its low profile when folded, the UpGrade is easily stored until needed at a later date.
Both the Florida project and New Hampshire project required 41 modules built off-site. So, the work load was spilt between the Whitley factories in Leola, Pennsylvania and South Whitley, Indiana. Furthermore, to keep more of the construction off-site, most of the utilities, lighting fixtures, electrical, wiring and panels were pre-installed in the factory. Overhead doors, man doors and insulation were also installed. As a result, much of the materials and labor were dramatically reduced on-site. This was a key factor for eliminating delays and interruptions of the project.
20,000 Ft² | 41 Modules | 4 Days
Once delivered, a crane and small set crew installs the modules. As the crane lifts each section, the walls unfold into position. Once the walls are verticle, the bottom plate is bolted down to the slab and mate-lines are closed up. After installation is complete, the equipment is moved into the building. But, that is not necessary in every case with the UpGrade. Work crews can install equipment prior to the building even going up. Because the modules are floorless, they can be installed over top of equipment, machinery and other interior structures. It’s a feature that accelerates the production process and reduces project delays. In this case, only four days pass from a bare concrete slab, to a closed in, weather tight building ready for business (see floor plan below for daily progress).
