A Relocatable Medical Building Resolves Disruption Problem

RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) is working with MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena to set up its patented Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV), relocatable medical building. All the while, MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena will update its existing linear accelerator. As a result, their patients will continue cancer treatments uninterrupted during the transition. In partnership with Whitley Manufacturing, the building is designed to relocate and set up quickly.

MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena, a non-profit located in Midland, Michigan was in need of updating their radiotherapy equipment. Since there was only one machine in the facility, they faced a dilemma. Either the clinic could continue treatments with aging equipment, or, have their patients travel long distances to other facilities while updates were performed. Unfortunately, both alternatives were unacceptable. However, with a relocatable medical building and RAD technology’s TRV, a modular facility has the ability to set up quickly and provide immediate patient care.

Modular Installation and Set-up

“We are excited to finally break ground and are pleased to have a way to continue treating patients while we upgrade to our new Varian TrueBeam,” said Douglas Kreis, Director at MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena.

Previously used by another medical facility, the installation crew relocates the modular building.  And, within a matter of days, its new home is near the existing medical center. Next, the RAD set-crew installs the four modules and the vault containing the Varian linear accelerator. Prior to delivery, RAD prepared the equipment and had it ready upon arrival. Once set, the temporary structure takes on a more permanent apperance. For instance, the exterior has a modern, clean look with a wood-grained EcoClad rain screen system. The interior includes an arrangement of inviting colors/materials to welcome patients. Spaces include a reception area, waiting room, office, and restroom.

“The TRV offers all the comforts of a permanent facility and has revolutionized the way hospital administrators think about upgrade timelines,” said John Lefkus, RAD Technology President. He continued, “this project is another step toward RAD creating a new normal. The TRV is so easily relocated that this building is now at its fifth location. We are proud to have a solution that allows facilities to easily upgrade their equipment without displacing patients and stopping treatment,” added Lefkus.
