Edward J. Walton School

The recently expanded elementary school is located in Springfield, New Jersey. With an enrollment of 300 students, Walton is situated in a comfortable suburban community approximately forty-miles west of New York City.

Their Problem

A rapidly growing enrollment meant the school district had to expand Walton. A budget was set, but three years of problem-solving passed before the project was given the notice to proceed. Obviously, the district was under increasing pressure to build more for less. Enrollment had continued to grow and inflation had eaten away at the power of their budget. The 32 module, 33,000 square foot addition would triple the size of the existing school.

Our Solution

Creative design work at Whitley halved the allotted number of modules needed, saving thousands in transportation costs off the bat. A creative boiler/chiller system was created, requiring only one-tenth of the space used by the boilers in the existing building, as well as offering superior efficiency. Windows were designed to allow double the natural light with greater insulation values. Overhead lighting was enhanced with more efficient fixtures. For additional savings the building was designed to connect to the existing structure in such a way as to create an enclosed and secure courtyard where children could play safely. An entryway was designed to save steps and reduce maintenance. The construction budget was more than met and creative design features provided for long-term savings, as well.
