About Old Redford

Old Redford Academy is a public charter school program in the heart of Detroit.  The school serves 1,700 children ranging in age from kindergarten to high school.  This non-profit organization stresses achievement, academics, ambition, and personal responsibility.

Their Need

Whitley Manufacturing and Innovative Modular Solutions have worked in the past with Old Redford, constructing their 56,000 SFT elementary school in 2006.  Old Redford Academy had found that the drop-out rate in the City of Detroit is highest among 9th graders.  As a result, they decided to create a disciplined, separate 9th Grade Academy.

Our Solution

Once again, ORA teamed with Whitley and IMS.  The team produced a separate structure, connecting via walkways to the main high school.  The building is non-combustible with a masonry exterior.  Floors arrived from the factory with steel b-deck, over which several inches of cementious Gypcrete were poured and ceramic tile installed.

Ceramic tile runs 4'-0" up all corridor walls and 8'-0" in the cafeteria and restrooms.  The facility is designed for energy efficiency, utilizing Energy Star certified roof mounted HVAC units, low-e glazed windows, efficient electronic lighting ballasts with T8 bulbs, occupancy sensor switches, low-flow and sensor controlled restroom fixtures, and a hot water recirculation system.
