About the School
The school is a public charter program in the heart of Detroit, serving
1,700 children from kindergarten to high school. Founded for excellence in education
and for the good of the neighborhood, this non-profit organization stresses academic
achievement and personal responsibility. Their waiting list exceeds their enrollment.
The organization had operated successfully in a 1950s era building which had long outlived
its usefulness as an educational institution. While the complex of buildings offered useable cafeteria and gymnasium space, the central educational facility was beyond renovation. A new building was required, but the time between the end of one school year and the beginning of another required quick action. The organization also expected the quality and aesthetics of the structure to match their commitment to educational excellence.
The Whitley Solution
Teaming with Innovative Modular Solutions of Naperville, Illinois, and Lee Stevens of Stevens Architects, Port Huron, Michigan, Whitley was able to provide a building which featured a large open atrium, extensive ceramic tile work through-out the building, recessed lockers, spacious classrooms and an elegant exterior design. The building comprises 50 modules, site-built additions and totals 56,000sf of space. It connects to the existing gymnasium and cafeteria and was ready in time for fall classes.
