About
Landstuhl Military Hospital
The facility is renown throughout the world for is range and quality of medical
treatment, especially for combat and disaster related injuries. Operated by
the
Department of Defense, the hospital is one of many around the world serving
American service personnel. Landstuhl is not only a continental military emergency
room, but it also provides care for civilian victims of earthquakes, floods,
explosions and combat from the Iceland to Afghanistan.
Their
Need
The DOD wanted a rapid and price-conscious way to add a magnetic resonance
imaging to the hospital. The development of MRI technology heralded faster
diagnosis,
more successful treatment and shorter rehabilitation. While the shortterm
expense would be considerable, MRI would yield benefits and cost reductions
including saving lives and limbs. Unfortunately, many of the military hospitals
around the world were built in the 1950s and were not easily remodeled to
accommodate the specifications of MRI technology.
The
Whitley
Solution
Whitley specializes in accommodating MRI technology.
This building, needed 5,000 miles distant, required special
design and packaging to ship overseas. It also required
European wiring and mechanical standards. Further, for
security reasons, the buildings had to be almost totally
completed, some 99%, in Indiana. Whitley was able to design
a structure with specialized shielding, tile work, raised
access flooring and custom laminate work, as well as build
it and ship it to Germany ahead of schedule and within
budget. The sturdy modular structure will continue to care
for our service members for many years to come. |
