About North Penn Hospital
Located north of Philadelphia, the a 150-bed, not-for-profit, acute care general hospital
provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient health services. The hospital has of staff more than 250 physicians representing 40 areas of medicine and surgery; most of whom are board-certified in their areas of specialization. Penn Hospital provides a full complement of patient care.

Their Need
An article in a health magazine attracted a doctor who was soon to move his practice
to NPH, and needed space very quickly to avoid a gap in service to his dialysis patients. The new dialysis clinic would catch up to increasing local demand and provide for quick future growth. During budget discussion NPH also saw the opportunity to add other facilities when they learned how relatively inexpensive
modular construction would be. A key condition of the project, however, had to be minimizing disruption to patients and hospital personnel during construction.

The Whitley Solution
Because modules were constructed in a factory and trucked to the NPH site two factors worked to the advantage of the hospital. First, off-site manufacture meant disruption to campus life was greatly diminished Secondly, foundation work did not have to preface construction of walls shortening the schedule by months. The
focus at NPH could remain on health care, not avoiding dump trucks. Secondly, modular construction permitted an accelerated schedule that finished the building within 120 days. Less
disruption, a faster time line and all under budget. The savings allowed the hospital to build a “seamless link” corridor between the existing building and the new wing.
