About
Skagit County Migrant
The Washington State Migrant Council is tasked by the state legislature
with working on behalf of the tens of thousands of migrant workers who
come to Washington annually to harvest, build and labor in seasonal
work. Their Need
Migrants in the Skagit County area had a variety of camps with a
variety of facilities, some very modern, some that dated back to the
1950s. Additionally, the state felt that a broader range of services
should be provided to migrant works not dissimilar to those provided to
state employees, one of which would be child care for working families
The Whitley
Solution
A 7,000 square foot facility was ordered late in 2003 for the 2004 work
season. Distributor Williams Scotsman worked closely with Washington
government to produce a building that would improve the lives of
migrant workers. Modular was chosen because of the significantly
shorter construction time needed to ready the building. Modular was
also chosen because changing demographic patterns required that the
building be relocatable. The building Whitley produced included a large
lunchroom, nursery, classrooms, playroom and administrative offices.
The Whitley solution proved to be expandable, as well, and all at a
price that would not strain the state’s budget.
