Summer Place Early Childhood Center of the Northward
Innovative Education Programs of Newark was awarded the task by the City of
Newark, New Jersey, to provide educational service for three- and four year-olds
in struggling Newark neighborhoods.
Their Need
Both cost and timing were a factor. The city operates on a tight budget under
significant political pressure and the project was not considered a core responsibility
of local government. The host neighborhood also had significant doubts.
Consequently, the project had to be done very well, become a showpiece and be
available at the beginning of the rapidly approaching school year. Various delays
meant construction schedules would leave no room for error. Beside the political
considerations, the building’s mechanical systems had to satisfy a need to simultaneously
heat part of the building while cooling other, sometimes adjacent, rooms.
The Whitley Solution I-R Mobile Modular was chosen to manage the project. They chose Whitley to
build the complex facility. Ground breaking was delayed until the end of June,
but within four months Newark had a beautiful
23,000sf school that the neighborhood embraced. It
is a showpiece both inside and outside contributing to
a swelling of community pride. The building also
came in under budget and on time. Whitley installed
a sophisticated boiler chiller system at the factory in
Indiana. This system allows each classroom space to
be individually climate controlled to the occupant’s
comfort level.
