Charter School, Quick ROI and Presentation Drawings Score Hits

In a large project that spanned only eight months, Whitley Manufacturing was able to meet the early fall deadline and high expectations set by a large charter school in Detroit.
The two-floor, 35,000 square foot school boasts 21 classrooms, a two-story lobby, a cafeteria, science lab, a suite of offices, recessed lockers, masonry stairwell, ceramic restrooms, and is one of the most eye-catching designs around.

Our distributor won the order partially on the strength of Whitley presentation drawings (see below) that reassured the board their building would be highly attractive and would nurture education. The board was paying steep rent for a inadequately retrofit warehouse.

Distributor Greg Nystrom of Innovative Modular Solutions and project manager Tom Frank showed the buyer how to save a year’s rent, be in an environment conducive to education and be ready for a school that fall. The contract was signed in March, construction started a month later, the 28 modules were set within a week in early June and the building was ready for students before mid-September. The board is happy: the accented brick siding and expansive glass entry way make the building one of the most attractive new projects in the city and the board president says the building is an inspiration to the neighborhood. The parents are proud of it and the kids are more enthusiastic about coming to school and learning.

Drawings Help Visualization

Presentation drawings sell buildings. Some sales depend upon the buyer overcoming reservations about the look of the building, so Lynn Smith, a veteran member of our design staff, works daily preparing drawings that we provide to our distributors to help sell each building. The drawings sit in the middle of the discussion and are the basis for design changes that sell the building. “Some drawings start from simple napkin sketches,” said Lynn. “We are able to show a variety of interior and exterior finishes, show furniture, calculate occupant loads, create plumbing and heating options all to help the customer ‘see’ the finished project. Our distributors can work from there to adjust the design to suit the buyer. The presentation drawings just make things easier.”
