Judges Choice Awarded to Whitley

March 18, 2010. (SOUTH WHITLEY, IN). Whitley Manufacturing Co., Inc. of South Whitley, Indiana was awarded the prestigious Judge’s Choice award for the highest scoring commercial modular building of 2009 at the annual World of Modular tradeshow and convention.

The World of Modular convention is the only tradeshow of its kind and is sponsored by annually by the commercial modular industry trade organization the Modular Building Institute (MBI). The awards contest, called the Awards of Distinction, featured over 100 entries and was judged by a panel of members from the media, construction professionals, architects and engineers. Entries are judged on the basis of architectural excellence, technical innovation, resource efficiency and time to completion. The Judge’s Choice award is given to the entry with the highest score across all categories.

The winning entry was completed in partnership with Innovative Modular Solutions of Bolingbrook, Illinois. The building houses the Old Redford Ninth Grade Academy in Detroit, Michigan. Old Redford Academy is a public charter school focusing on structure, discipline and academic excellence. The 20,200 square foot building is comprised of twenty-three prefabricated modular units of a non-combustible construction type. The building’s sub-floor is a poured cementious material overlaid with ceramic tile and recyclable carpet tiles. Interior walls are clad with 4’-0” high ceramic wainscot throughout the building and with full wall ceramic cladding at the cafeteria and restrooms.

The building’s mechanical and electrical systems were designed with an eye towards sustainability and efficiency. E.P.A. Energy Star certified rooftop H.V.A.C. units provide a comfortable interior atmosphere that can be adjusted per classroom to optimize occupant comfort. The structure features a well-insulated building envelope and efficient lighting systems equipped with occupancy sensors. Restroom fixtures are equipped with sensors and the building features a hot water recirculation system. The exterior is clad in masonry, allowing the building to blend seamlessly with its historic surroundings.

From groundbreaking to completion, the project spanned only 87 days, allowing the school to quickly offer classes in the new building and see a rapid return on their initial construction investment.
