The

Challenge

Purpose + Timeline

The Kent School District approved $4.8 million to build a new facility for The Outreach Program (TOP). The program prepares special needs students for their future by providing community-based transition services to enhance post-school quality of life. Their current facility (built in 1951) is in much need of updates and it’s 4420 sq. ft. layout will not provide the room needed for growth, let alone, sustain its current enrollment.

The

Solution

Expertise + Efficiency

School Director of Facility services, Fred Long, approached Aries Building Systems, to design and develop the new concept with a 12,500 square foot permanent modular structure. Utilizing an off-site building method, Kim Neill, Aries Vice President of Major Projects, along with an accomplished Aries team , oversaw the site preparation at the Kent Phoenix Academy, in Kent, Washington, while Whitley Evergreen built the structure in Marysville. This concurrent construction approach saves almost 40% of the project timeline, and meets the scheduled deadline for the fall semester. The new building includes five classrooms, one of which will be set up as an occupational and physical therapy room. The facility also has a staff work room and a multipurpose room, equipped with two residential kitchens — one of which is handicapped accessible to teach students how to cook. The design utilizes 4 modular roof sections above the large common area, providing high vaulted ceilings that open to a row of clear-story windows, giving plenty of natural light to the wide open space below. The program currently serves 44 students and has four certified teachers and 13 paraprofessionals. With the additional space, the new facility provides ample room as it opens this fall, and will allow the program to grow in the future.
